Shipping companies are re-routing vessels to avoid the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden due to safety concerns. The recent escalation of Houthi attacks originating from Yemen on vessels moving through the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden is endangering the safety of crews, vessels, and customers’ cargo.

Consequently, many shipping carriers, including Maersk, CMA CGM, MSC, Hapag Lloyd, and oil companies such as BP, have announced that they will divert shipments until stability in the region is restored.

As a result, on Monday, 18 December 2023, the US Secretary of Defense, Lloyd Austin, announced a new US-led operation that focuses on addressing the security challenges of shipping companies navigating the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden. In a statement, Austin declared the establishment of Operation Prosperity Guardian, an essential multinational security initiative under the umbrella of the Combined Maritime Forces and led by its Task Force 153, with a specific focus on ensuring security in the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden. The newly formed multinational coalition also involves the United Kingdom, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles, and Spain.*

While maritime companies hope for a resolution enabling a resumption of using the Suez Canal and traversing the Red Sea/Gulf of Aden, the specific timeline remains unclear. Our Arpin International service team maintains continuous communication with affected shipping lines. We will reach out to customers whose individual shipments are affected to establish expectations and provide regular updates. We appreciate your trust and loyalty during these uncertain times and assure you of our ongoing efforts to navigate through them collaboratively.
