When you move to a new neighborhood, you are somewhat forced into seclusion. The best way to avoid prolonged isolation in your new area is to make friends with your neighbors! Though you shouldn’t use the child’s method of doing so, there are a few different “adult” ways to make new friends. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
The first rule of how to meet friends in a new neighborhood is: Knock on the door!
It can be as simple as that. Within the first couple of weeks of moving in, it is never a bad idea to knock on the neighbor’s door and introduce yourself. Bring a baked good or gift basket. Many people appreciate the gesture and, of course, will be curious about who their new neighbors are too.
Throw a housewarming party
A fun way to meet friends in a new neighborhood is to throw a housewarming party. You can invite friends and family, but also some of your new neighbors. It is a great way to mingle with them without feeling so much pressure. It’s also an excellent opportunity to get the scoop on your new neighborhood.
Join a local club
Whether a local Elk’s Club or a reading group, joining an organization local to the community is an easy way to get to know your peers from your neighborhood and the surrounding areas. It may take some time to solidify your standing in the new club, but eventually, you’ll earn a great sense of camaraderie and community togetherness. What’s better than that?
Attend a town event
Town hall meetings, school plays, and farmers’ markets are all great settings for bumping into new friends. If you start becoming a regular, you’ll likely get to know all the other neighborhood folks who frequent these places. You may even consider taking your dog to a local dog park or checking out the local brewery for social interaction.
Join an online community
Making new connections online is ever-growing in popularity for those looking to find like-minded people. Are you into gardening? Cosplay? Classic movies? Various industry insights? There is a good chance you’ll find a local online community with people just like you. Facebook is a great place to find these types of groups. Check some groups out, and you’ll make friends in no time.
Take advantage of some of these helpful tips, and soon, you’ll have cemented your presence in your new neighborhood and gained some new friends along the way. That way, you can focus on other important things, like unpacking, decorating, and enjoying some time with your family.
